History of the Breed

Anexso Farm continues the education and support of the St. Croix hair sheep breed.   As a developed American breed, they are part of the Caribbean hair sheep family and they continue to gain popularity in the United States.

Dr. Warren Foote of Utah State University imported a group of ewes and rams from St. Croix, part of the US Virgin Islands, in 1975.  His selection of polled, white sheep is also sometimes considered to be called Virgin Island White.  From this original offspring, uniformity and consistency has resulted in a standardized breed in the United States.  At this time, the Livestock Conservancy has listed this Heritage Breed to be on the watch list.  Heritage Breeds of animals are considered to be raised by our previous American ancestors.   The Livestock Conservancy defines a watch breed as a breed that presents genetic or numerical concerns or have a limited geographic distribution, with fewer than 2,500 annual registration is the US.
